Fo r
most of us, this edition of the Rudder means an end to the boating season
and the reality that we must once again embrace winter. With this passing of
seasons and the end of my first term as President, I find myself wondering
where the time went. I take great comfort in conveying to membership that
ACBS continues on an upward path to both financial strength and membership
vitality. We have set yet another record with membership approaching 7,700
strong. We have spent less and realized more revenue than was budgeted,
while moving closer to our financial reserve goal every year. I would like
to thank the hard working Directors, Executives and Committee Captains
without who’s input and hard work our accomplishments would not have
happened. As I traveled to the many boat shows this last year I found with great pleasure an opportunity to meet new people, see new sites and marvel at the many accomplishments the Chapters and their members have made on a local level. While meeting new acquaintances this summer, I was often introduced as the President of ACBS, along with the comment, “He’s here checking up on our Chapter.” Hearing this at first I laughed and continued on with my conversation. However, after hearing this comment again and again, I became alarmed at this perception. ACBS Executives are not visiting Chapters and shows to check up; quite the contrary, we come to visit and make sure the Chapters know that ACBS International cares. ACBS International exists to provide service and support to the 49 Chapters within the organization. This is a very important distinction. Despite all the adversity with unwelcome
hurricane and unusual events at the Pineisle Resort during our Annual
meeting and 3rd International Boat Show everyone who attended had a great
time. We missed all of you who could not make it this year. My special
thanks go out to Tom O’Rourke, Annual Meeting Captain, Bob Bush, Boat Show
Captain, our hosts the Blue Ridge Chapter and all the volunteers for your
hard work and dedication ensuring a successful event. I came to as many shows as my time would
allow. I only wish I could have attended them all.
