According
the calendar, Spring has arrived! Our members and chapters are busy making plans
for the many upcoming boat shows and gatherings that will make our summers both
exciting and “too short”.
I just returned from a fabulous show in Mt. Dora. Terry Fiest and the Sunnyland Chapter continue to do a spectacular job in making this a premier event. The Mt. Dora show is now the largest antique boat show in the United States; there were over 240 boats on display in-water and on land under beautiful sunny skies.
Once again, Kathy Snyder at Headquarters has done an outstanding job handling the thousands of renewals received in the last few months. Membership has increased again this year as more and more boating enthusiasts are being introduced to the wonderful camaraderie and the many benefits of being a part of the ACBS.
Many thanks also to Tab Miller for all his efforts on our soon to be mailed 2002 directory. It’s bigger and better than ever this year.
The Hickman Sea Sled, which is being raffled to benefit the Endowment
Scholarship Fund, has begun its cross-country journey. Kudos to Stan Petersen
for all his work in putting together a perfectly-orchestrated schedule.
Beginning in Mt. Dora at the end of March (where over $2,400 in tickets were
sold!), the Hickman is scheduled to appear at 15 boat shows before arriving in
Coeur d’Alene, where the winning ticket will be drawn on September 21st at the
Annual Meeting. Don’t miss out on your chance to win this boat! Contact your
chapter’s designated “ticket seller” or Kathy Snyder at Headquarters to purchase
your raffle tickets.
The “Tiller” section of the last Rudder included an article on the great work
being done by Adam Green and “Rocking the Boat”, dedicated to helping young
people in the Bronx learn boat building skills. The future of our organization
is dependent on our youth and instilling in them a sense of excitement and love
of antique boats. Les Demaline and the Youth Devel-opment Committee are busy
working toward this goal. With another boating season upon us, I urge you to
include your children and grandchildren in all your activities, from uncovering
and washing your boat … to spending a family day on the water.
Plans for our Annual Meeting in Coeur d’Alene, ID are quickly coming together, thanks to John Harvey and his committee. Hosted by the Inland Empire Chapter, the meeting will be held at the beautiful Coeur d’Alene Resort. The weekend will also include our first annual “ACBS International” Boat Show, being planned by Jeff Stebbins and the Boat Show Committee. This will be a judged show, and John Howard has invited expert judges from the U.S. and Canada to take part. Awards to be given in a number of classes, including the Antique & Classic Boat Society’s “Boat of the Year” award. This promises to be one of our best Annual Meetings yet, and I urge you to be a part of this history-in-the-making. Over half of our allotted rooms have been reserved, so act quickly. Visit our website at www.acbs.org for more information, including event schedule, judging information, and registration forms for both the meeting and the boat show. I look forward to seeing many of you there!
