Welcome to the new year and another outstanding edition of the Rudder. This issue contains our special kid’s “Tiller” section, and it’s always delightful to see the next generation of boating enthusiasts keeping the spirit alive. Also in this edition you’ll read about Adam Green and his Rocking The Boat program. Adam has put together a boat-building program in the Bronx for the neighborhood teens; teens who would otherwise be at-risk without supervised activity. Rocking The Boat teaches not only carpentry skills but instills a sense of pride and accomplishment - with the bonus being a beautifully-constructed Whitehall pulling boat, ceremoniously launched in the Harlem River. Adam should be commended for his efforts, and we can only hope that someday there will be 100 “Adams” working with our youth and passing along the craft of wooden boat building.

Our first meeting of 2002 was held in St. Augustine, Florida. As we went to press, plans were being made for our Board Meeting, Chapters’ Roundtable, and a number of social activities including buggy rides around the city. Our upcoming meetings have been planned: The Spring Meeting, April 11 to 14, will be held in Charleston, SC; the Summer Meeting is June 21 to 23 in Niagara-on-the-Lake, ONT, and the Annual Meeting is September 18 to 22 in Coeur d’Alene, ID. The Annual Meeting will include our first annual International Boat Show, and Jeff Stebbins and his committee are working to make this a premier event. Our meetings are open to all ACBS members, and we encourage you to join us.

Our Society continues to be a source of information and great camaraderie for many boat owners, and our membership continues to grow. The benefits of membership are numerous and include the directory, a useful networking tool; the Rudder, one of the foremost magazines devoted to antique boating; and boatshows, cruises, workshops, discounts on goods and services, and countless social events. Be sure to return your renewal today to continue your membership and to ensure your listing in the directory. The deadline for inclusion in the directory is February 1, so don’t be left out!

Stan Petersen and Tom Flood have put together a raffle to benefit the ACBS Scholarship Fund. Lindsay Hopkins III has donated a 1929 fully-restored Hickman Sea Sled with 26.5hp Johnson engine and custom trailer valued at $20,000; raffle tickets are available for $5 each and can be purchased from Headquarters or at your boat shows. Show your support and take a chance to win this beautiful boat. The drawing will be held at the Annual Meeting in Coeur d’Alene and you need not be present to win.

Our website, www.acbs.org, is a wealth of information for our members. Check the site often for the calendar of events, meeting information and registration forms, links to chapter websites, the ever-popular discussion board, and other noteworthy items. New to the site is the complete Ships Store, with secure online ordering soon to come. We encourage submission of photos, articles, and events; send information to Gary Baker at gebaker@10n9th.com.

Our various committees and volunteers continue their hard work to ensure the future of ACBS. John Ford (Wine Country Chapter) is putting together a “five-year plan” to coordinate river trips across the United States and Canada. If you or your Chapter is presently conducting a River Cruise, Odyssey, or Lake Hop, please let John know so he can add it to the list. If there is a waterway in your area that you think we should explore for a potential ACBS event, he would welcome those suggestions as well.Email: jhoffman@lk-george.com
